An evening for leaders shaping what comes next
Professor · Managerial Decision Sciences · IESE Business School
Roberto García-Castro is a Professor in the Managerial Decision Sciences Department at IESE Business School. His research explores value creation, distribution, and the evolving relationship between technology, productivity, and human prosperity. He is the author of the Abundance Index — a pioneering measure of how AI and automation are transforming the number of humans required to generate one unit of economic value.
Tesla's new mission in 2026 is "to build a world of amazing abundance." This signals a shift away from the traditional view of economics as a science of scarcity — toward a world where AI, robotics, and energy enable value to be created with fewer human inputs. The paradox is that despite AI's apparent super-powers, productivity gains remain limited in aggregate data. A plausible explanation: we are still in the investment phase of a classic J-curve — firms are reorganizing processes, retraining workers, and building new business models before measurable gains appear.
The new Abundance Index, authored by Prof. García-Castro, measures how many humans are required to generate one unit of value. Leading firms already show that fewer people can produce the same output — but true abundance only exists if displaced workers retain purchasing power. For executives, the key question is not whether AI will transform productivity, but whether their organizations will successfully navigate this transition to capture value in the new landscape.
